Arthur Smith was born in New York City in 1917. He attended Cooper Union where he studied architecture, painting and decorative design. After collaborating with another artist on jewelry designs, he later opened a shop and studio on Cornelia Street in New York City. In 1948, he opened his own jewelry shop, Art Smith Jewelry in Greenwich Village.
